Canadian Cancer Society, Newfoundland and Labrador Division, and Hope Air are pleased to announce the two charities will collaborate to provide free air transportation to cancer patients living in Labrador who need care not available in their home communities.
On Dec. 11, a province-wide radiothon raised $175,000, which will launch the flight program for Labrador cancer patients. The Hope for Healing Radiothon, with the support of VOCM Cares and Steele Communications, aired from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Steele Communications radio stations.
“Receiving a cancer diagnosis is unbelievably stressful. The Canadian Cancer Society is here to ease some of that burden by providing supportive programs and services to cancer patients and their families. We’ve been providing affordable accommodations at Daffodil Place since 2009, and we’re now excited to be introducing a program that will help in air transportation to and from cancer care for those in Labrador, “ said Matthew Piercey, executive director, Canadian Cancer Society, Newfoundland and Labrador Division.
Hope Air executive director Doug Keller-Hobson said, “We are delighted to work with the Canadian Cancer Society to meet an urgent need in Labrador and get cancer patients to healthcare in St. John’s.” He added, “Conquering cancer can be a long and difficult journey. Getting to treatments shouldn’t have to be.”

Hope Air is a national charity based in Toronto which has provided over 80,000 free flights since its inception in 1986.
