The Region of Waterloo International Airport is now ranked the 16th busiest Airport in Canada according to Statistics Canada Annual Aircraft Movement Statistics Report for 2013. This report tracks aircraft movements (a take-off or a landing) and is used by Transport Canada and Nav Canada for measuring the workload of air traffic controllers, aircraft activity on air routes and runway utilization.
In 2013, a total of 106,808 aircraft movements where recorded at the Region of Waterloo International Airport, an increase of 3.2 per cent over 2012 – the busiest year in a decade.  Airports of similar rank include:  Abbotsford (ranked 14), Toronto’s Billy Bishop (ranked 15) and Winnipeg’s St. Andrews (ranked 17).
“In addition to being the 16th busiest airport in the country, the Region of Waterloo International Airport recently became the busiest general aviation airport in Ontario.  About 50 per cent of our aircraft movements can be attributed to flight training, and we are proud to have one of Canada’s largest flight schools, the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre based here,” said Chris Wood, general manager at the Region of Waterloo International Airport. “As we continue to secure additional scheduled flight opportunities, we will make sure general aviation continues to thrive at our facility.”
2013 was also a record breaking year for passenger traffic with 138,788 people travelling through the air terminal building. This represents a 15 per cent increase over 2012. Daily scheduled air service with connections to over 250 destinations in 40 countries is provided by: American Airlines offering twice daily non-stop service to Chicago; WestJet, offering daily non-stop service to Calgary; and Sunwing Airlines offering weekly seasonal service to Cancun, Mexico.  Flying from home has never been easier and now you’ll have more time for the things that matter.
