For Canada to become a world leader in the biofuels industry, we need to convert our impressive R&D achievements into a robust infrastructure and trade. To catalyze this process, BioFuelNet – a federally funded Network of Centres of Excellence devoted to supporting the growth of Canada’s biofuels industry – has organized one of the most important green energy events in the network’s history: The Advanced Biofuels Symposium 2014, taking place in Ottawa from May 27 to May 29.
With several partners on board, including the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, Air Canada, McGill University, Enerkem and FPInnovations, BioFuelNet has created a high-energy, outside-the-box program to help shift the Canadian biofuels sector into high gear.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, known for her unflinching criticism of green-negative policies, will deliver the opening keynote address. The A-list of speakers will also include alt-energy researchers, heads of industry, and government decision makers, who will address such issues as sustainability, commercialization and policy development in the Canadian biofuels sector. Later that evening, the Symposium Dinner Gala, hosted by Air Canada at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, will set the scene for a more informal exchange of research and business ideas.
Complementing the symposium’s bird’s-eye-view presentations, a series of interactive, discussion-based sessions will give participants ample opportunities to network, share ideas, and form alliances. Those looking for business opportunities may find special appeal in the session on entrepreneurism in the biofuels economy. Biofuel start-ups may find their “next big idea” waiting for them at the session on feedstock and conversion technologies or the one on biojet fuel strategies. In short, the program has something for everyone.
On the closing day of the event, award-winning film director (Best Documentary, Sundance Film Festival 2008) and energy visionary Josh Tickell will share his thought-provoking ideas – from the green megatrends shaping our planet to the link between emerging technologies and wealth creation – in a final keynote address.
