Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has announced that its Gulfstream G280 aircraft recently established a speed record between Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands in Europe, and Teterboro, New Jersey, making the transatlantic journey in just seven hours and 26 minutes.

The super mid-size business jet departed Guernsey Airport at 7:54 a.m. local time and arrived at Teterboro Airport at 10:20 a.m. local time, completing the 3,216-nautical-mile/5,956-kilometre flight at an average speed of Mach 0.80.

“This flight showcased the G280’s outstanding takeoff performance,” said Scott Neal, senior vice-president, Worldwide Sales, Gulfstream. “Guernsey’s available takeoff distance is less than 5,200 feet, yet the G280 was able to make this trip with plenty of room to spare. One of the many benefits of the G280 is being able to use smaller airports and runways around the world without sacrificing range and speed.”

The G280, which has amassed 57 speed records since its November 2012 entry into service, has a range of 3,600 nm/6,667 km at Mach 0.80. It is powered by two Honeywell HTF7250G engines, each of which provides 7,624 pounds of thrust.

The engines can propel the G280 to a flight level of 43,000 feet/13,106 metres in approximately 20 minutes and feature reduced emissions, longer maintenance intervals and decreased noise levels. The aircraft also has the best cabin in its class, with high-definition entertainment systems, industry-leading cabin sound levels and 19 super-sized windows.

Pending approval by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association, the city-pair record will be sent to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland for recognition as a world record.
