Bombardier is expecting certification in the second quarter of 2017 that would allow its C Series aircraft to land at London City Airport in the United Kingdom.
The company completed a series of dedicated flight trials this week and expects to receive “steep approach” certification so that airlines can land the CS100 at London City, according to a Globe and Mail report.
It’s expected the C Series will become the largest commercial aircraft capable of landing at London City Airport, which has the challenge of a shorter runway.
The airport is a four-mile drive from London’s main financial district, and certification would allow Swiss Airlines, the C Series’ launch customer, to operate at London City Airport, the Globe and Mail reported.
This capability could be a boon to sales of the C Series in a difficult market, but Bombardier spokesman Bryan Tucker was quoted as saying the company is “comfortable where we are at this point” with existing sales.
