S.A.F.E. Structure Designs announced it is designing and manufacturing custom ergonomic maintenance and fall protection platforms for the U.S. Air Force’s fleet of Boeing KC-135 aircraft. The maintenance personnel at Mac Dill AFB in Tampa, Fla., will be equipped with safety first maintenance platforms that provide access to the entire aircraft including the tail section over five stories high. The platforms will be designed to allow five maintenance technicians on the platform with ergonomic access to all necessary areas required to maintain the aircraft. The design will cover many variables with the intent to provide the mechanics safety and efficiency when performing routine maintenance or complete overhauls on this massive aircraft. As with all S.A.F.E. custom equipment, the mechanics share their requirements directly with the S.A.F.E. design team to ensure all challenges are safely met.
The ergonomic maintenance stands will consist of multiple platforms for all sections of the aircraft including a fuselage/cargo door stand with a cargo door extension ramp connecting it to the wing. There will be left and right wing platforms. The nose maintenance platform will include nose cone storage. The tail maintenance platform will cover the left and right side with a connecting bridge to access both sides. The tail compartment stand will handle a minimum of 1,500 pound load. These large mobile platforms will be constructed of aluminum and equipped with LED lighting. Delivery is planned for June 2021.
