Spirit Airlines issues inaugural sustainability report

Spirit Airlines, Inc. (NYSE: SAVE) shared its 2020 Sustainability Report, showcasing results of the airline’s longstanding commitment to meaningful advancements in environmental sustainability, Guest and community service, Team Member support, and governance. Despite the global impact of COVID-19, Spirit remained dedicated to integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices into its business. The report highlights Spirit’s plans for continued progress in broadening ESG initiatives and improving communities and society at large.

“Publishing our first Sustainability Report is an important step forward in explaining Spirit’s commitment to ESG efforts and how that philosophy increases the sustainability and resiliency of our company,” said President and CEO Ted Christie. “We believe operating our business in a sustainable manner will benefit our Guests, Team Members, investors, and the communities we serve. We also believe building a workplace that celebrates and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, creates an environment where we can drive positive change.”

Spirit’s Board of Directors recognizes the increasing importance of ESG to the company, its future, and its stakeholders, and has amended the charter of its Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee to express the importance of developing continuous ESG strategy and practices.

Spirit’s 2020 Sustainability Report focuses its reporting disclosures on four priority areas: 

Environment

The airline operates one of the most fuel-efficient fleets in the world and does so in an environmentally conscious manner that benefits its Guests, Team Members, investors, and the communities it serves, all while helping to limit its negative impact over the long term. In 2020, Spirit advanced its commitment to cultivating environmental awareness by adopting an Environmental Policy that communicates expectations to Team Members and business partners. Protecting the environment is also one of the three designated pillars of The Spirit Charitable Foundation.

Social

Spirit aims to build human rights awareness, actively encourage its Team Members to help people and communities in need and attract a diverse pipeline of talent for Spirit and the aviation/aerospace industry. The company’s recently adopted Human Rights Policy Statement reaffirms Spirit’s commitment to respecting and upholding the human rights of its Guests, Team Members, and business partners. 

Workforce 

By establishing a workplace that celebrates and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, Spirit continuously promotes Team Member engagement and creates an environment that drives positive change.
