Webster Memorial Trophy celebrates 90th anniversary

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition celebrated its ninetieth anniversary following their return to operation following the global pandemic. Finalists Kwaku Brefo-Wireko, Douglas Browne, Alivia Chanyi, Damon Crane, Harmeet Garg, and Valeriya Mordvinova spent a week at Southern Interior Flight Centre, Kelowna, British Columbia vying for the title.

The Board of the Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is excited to announce that Harmeet Garg, of Southern Interior Flight Centre, and finalist for Western Canada was ultimately the champion and was awarded the Webster Memorial Trophy. Douglas Browne, of MFC Training, and finalist for Eastern Canada placed runner-up, and was awarded the Eunice Carter Trophy.

The NAV Canada Award was earned by Valeriya Mordvinova, of the Rockcliffe Flying Club, finalist for the Ninety-Nines Inc. for achieving the highest grade on the qualifying exam. The RedBird Flight Simulations awarded Damon Crane, of Brampton Flight Centre, and finalist for The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association for his exemplary effort in this year’s simulation. The Northern Lights Aero Foundation also provided a bursary to this year’s female finalists, Alivia Chanyi and Valeria Mordvinova.

Our finalists were delighted to receive many gifts and acknowledgements from our industry partners in celebration of their efforts” said Elise MacGlashing, National Administrator of the Webster Trophy Competition, “Our team, and our finalists enjoyed the local community’s warm hospitality.”

This year’s finalists received gifts and acknowledgements from Canadian North, The Experimental Aircraft Association, Aero-Formatech, CAE, The College of Professional Pilots of Canada, The Canadian Forces Snowbirds, VIP Pilot, Aviation Egress Systems, and the Air Transport Association of Canada.

In addition to receiving the Eunice Carter Trophy, our runner up received gifts and acknowledgements from Hamilton Watch, Robert Bradford, Hangaaar, MFC Training, The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association, INRAT Exam Prep, Aviation Egress Systems, and Aircraft Spruce.

This year’s winner received the Webster Memorial Trophy, The Webster Medallion along with gifts acknowledgements from Air Canada, Hamilton Watch, Robert Bradford, The Snowbirds, The Air Canada Pilots Association, Hangaaar, MFC Training, Air Transport Association of Canada, Brampton Flight College, The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association, Canadian Aviator Magazine, Aviation Egress Systems, and INRAT Exam Prep.

Southern Interior Flight Centre also received a bursary towards training a promising student of their choosing from Flightsafety International.

The evening ended with the announcement of next year’s host school, Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre. “We are really looking forward to working alongside the WWFC team as plan ahead for next year and continue to carry out the legacy of John and the competition itself”, says Laura Matheson, National Administrator of the 2023 Webster Memorial Trophy.
