Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM) will have more than 50 aircraft dating back as far as the First World War on display July 7 for an event titled, ‘Air Force Day: Past, Present and Future.’

CWHM is located in Mount Hope, Ont., adjacent to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. It is said to be Canada’s largest flying museum.

The Royal Canadian Air Force will attend, with a CC-150 Polaris, CC-177 Globemaster III, CC-130J Hercules and CC-130H Hercules aircraft, and a CH-146 Griffon helicopter.

Most of these will be open for public tours.

Several dozen CWHM aircraft will also be on display, along with aircraft from The Great War Flying Museum (GWFM) and Waterloo Warbirds.

Based at Brampton-Caledon Airport, GWFM flies several replica First World War aircraft and plans to have its Nieuport 28 and Sopwith 1-½ Strutter on display.

Waterloo Warbirds will have their newly painted 1958 de Havilland DH-115 Vampire, adorned with special 422 Squadron markings, as well as their Canadair T-33 Mk. 3″Mako Shark.”

The museum ramp will be filled with aircraft, but there are also lots of family activities inside the museum and out of the sun: Flight simulators, a well-stocked gift shop, a canteen for food and beverages, as well as cockpit and aircraft tours.

Paintings celebrating the 100th anniversary of 400 Squadron will also be on display.

Of special interest is an exhibit called “The Real Monuments Men,” on loan from the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.

The exhibit explores how a group of soldiers searched and recovered hidden art the Nazis stole and hid during the Second World War.

Several aircraft under restoration can be viewed up close, including a Grumman Avenger AS 3, Grumman CS2F-2 Tracker, Fairey Firefly Mk. VI and a North American B-25 Mitchell bomber that is undergoing heavy maintenance.
Restorers and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions.
