Eviation Aircraft, a manufacturer of all-electric aircraft, announced at this year’s Paris Air Show that Aerolease, a Miami-based leasing company, has signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the acquisition of up to 50 Alice electric commuter aircraft. Aerolease will provide financing and leasing options for the Alice aircraft to operators worldwide.

The nine-passenger Alice is powered by two magniX magni650 electric propulsion units and features an advanced battery system — allowing the aircraft to operate with zero carbon emissions and significantly lower operating costs compared to conventional light jets or high-end turboprops, according to Eviation.

With a maximum operating speed of 260 knots, the Alice aircraft is projected to operate on routes ranging from 150 to 250 miles upon entering service. However, Eviation has noted that the battery system is “endlessly upgradeable,” indicating the potential for extended range as battery technology continues to evolve.

Eddie Jaisaree, VP of commercial sales at Eviation, commented on the significant order from Aerolease, stating, “The Alice aircraft meets the demand for zero-carbon technology that we are seeing from governments, regulators, and the public, while offering a more enjoyable flight experience and lower operating costs. Aerolease further demonstrates the commitment of leasing companies to revolutionize air travel and we are very pleased to receive this order.”

Jep Thornton, managing partner of Aerolease, shared: “New projects that address sustainability are key to our future strategy and we are excited to be working with Eviation to offer our global customers a zero-emissions solution that is good for the planet and provides an exciting means of opening up new regional routes.”

In the four years since the last edition of the Paris Air Show, Eviation has achieved the maiden flight of its Alice aircraft — which took place in September 2022 — and has secured over US$ 4 billion in orders.

In addition to the latest order from Aerolease, Eviation has also received orders from U.K.-based regional aircraft lessor MONTE (30 aircraft), U.S.-based Cape Air (75 aircraft), U.S.-based Global Crossing Airlines (50 aircraft), Germany-based EVIA AERO (25 aircraft), Australia’s Northern Territory Air Services (20 aircraft), Mexico-based Aerus (30 aircraft), Air New Zealand (up to 23 aircraft), and DHL Express for 12 Alice planes in the eCargo configuration.

Looking ahead, Eviation is working towards certification flight tests and plans to include three aircraft in its flight test fleet. However, CEO Gregory Davis acknowledged that battery technology presents a significant challenge in terms of certification, as there is currently a lack of unity between certification standards for battery technology between the Federal Aviation Administration and the assets.

Eviation hopes to begin its certification test program around 2025, with the first deliveries anticipated to take place by 2027.
