On Sept. 10, Windsor residents were treated to the sight of a U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) mock strike on a barge in front of the Detroit skyline and a fly-over of several military aircraft.
Every year, the USMC hosts a Marine Week in cities across the United States and the first week of September saw the Marines descend on the Detroit waterfront to connect with the local community. From Sept. 6 to 10, the Marines performed live demonstrations, musical performances and engaged the public with hands-on exhibits to teach about time-honoured Marine Corps traditions.
The USMC was formed in 1775 and has been the United States expeditionary force since that time. In times of crisis, the Marines respond swiftly and aggressively from the air, land and sea.
On Sept. 10, a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the Philip A. Hart Plaza included a static display of equipment and then a Marine Air and Ground Task Force (MAGTF) demonstration that exhibited the coordination between all four components of the Corps. Participating aircraft included two F/A-18 Hornets, two MV-22 Ospreys, and a KC-130J Hercules. Helicopters used for the display included a CH-52 Super Stallion, an AH-1 Cobra and a UH-1 Venom.
