CAE announced the launch of a new multi-crew pilot license (MPL) cadet pilot training program with European airline Volotea.

As part of the ab-initio pilot training program, aspiring captains will begin the European Aviation Safety Agency theoretical knowledge training at CAE's training centre in Madrid, followed by flight training in Phoenix, Ariz., and Oxford, U.K. CAE Photo

The new Volotea MPL Career Program will replace CAE and Volotea’s existing airline transport pilot license (ATPL) cadet program and provide aspiring cadets an integrated and seamless transition to the position of first officer with Volotea on the Airbus A320. The MPL program provides cadets with more training hours in an Airbus A320 full-flight simulator (FFS), preparing cadets to the highest level of competency and proficiency for their future role as first officers at the airline.

“Our growth plans require access to highly qualified and well-trained pilots. Our collaboration with CAE on the creation of this bespoke MPL program will allow us to further standardize the training of our future pilots,” said Xavier Bueno, Volotea MPL co-ordinator. “Furthermore, the rigour of MPL training guarantees better adaptation to our standard operating procedures and a better fit overall with company culture.”

“We are pleased to be partnering again with Volotea on its new cadet pilot MPL program,” said Nick Leontidis, CAE’s group president, Civil Aviation Training Solutions. “CAE has led the industry in the creation of competency-based MPL programs for over 10 years, and we are proud to be supporting Volotea in this evolution of its cadet training footprint.”

Aspiring pilots selected for the Volotea MPL Career Program, will begin training in the spring of 2020, with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) theoretical knowledge instruction (TKI) at CAE Madrid. They will do their flight training at one of CAE’s global flight training locations before returning to CAE Barcelona to complete the basic, intermediate and advanced phases of the program. Upon completion of their training program, the next generation of pilots will become Volotea co-pilots.

Since the launch of the airline in 2012, CAE has provided Volotea with pilot and cabin crew recruitment and training including the Volotea first officer program and initial type ratings.
