Phase 1 of the 2018 Student UAS Competition is complete.
A judging panel, comprised of Canadian subject matter experts, has completed its independent review of the technical papers submitted by all 14 teams.
This year’s crime scene investigation involves a biker gang holed up in a barn with a stash of drugs and weapons. In support to the local RCMP, the teams will be required to conduct surveillance of the property, to deliver a remote listening device to a location on the property based on results of the surveillance, and to search a large area adjacent to the property for vital pieces of evidence
Overall, the judges were impressed by the quality of the reports, the inclusion of new technologies into the systems and the way the solutions were presented.
Unmanned Systems Canada has announced the top three design papers as follows: UAS Design Paper Competition.
- First place: Carleton University – Blackbird;
- Second place: Université de Sherbrooke – VAMUdeS; and
- Third place: University of Toronto – Aerial Robotics Division.
Phase 2, the flying portion of the competition, will take place in Southport, Man., May 4 to 6, 2018.
Prizes for both phases will be presented at the competition awards banquet on the closing evening.
