True Blue Power, the world’s first company to engineer and Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) technical standard order (TSO) certify lithium-ion main ship batteries for aviation, today announced its TB44 (46 amp-hour) Lithium-ion Aircraft Battery and TI2004 (2,000 VA) DC-to-AC Inverter will provide power to the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works X-59 plane.

This experimental aircraft is specifically designed to quiet the sonic boom and is integral to NASA’s Quesst mission to drastically reduce the noise level of a sonic boom.

The long, slender structure of Lockheed Martin’s X-59 is key to its mission, and precise weight specifications and emergency power loads are critical requirements.

The True Blue Power TB44 battery is the only commercially available, certified lithium-ion battery on the market to meet the aircraft’s unique demands. Weighing only 51.7 pounds, this reduction in weight and increase in power provides X-59 engineers with the most design flexibility.

True Blue Power 2,000-watt DC-to-AC inverter

The True Blue Power TI2004 inverter is uniquely capable of meeting the X-59’s three-phase, 400 Hz power requirements. The aircraft utilizes three inverters, interconnected, to produce 6,000 watts of power. The TI2004 is smaller, lighter, and more efficient than competing units and provides input transient, overload and short-circuit protection, up to 150 per cent of the rated load.

“The TB44 lithium-ion battery and TI2004 inverter are available off-the-shelf. They feature longer useful life and require less maintenance than competing units,” said Erik Ritzman, vice-president of OEM sales and support for True Blue Power.

“This results in significant cost savings, meeting the X-plane’s budgetary requirements.”
