As the need for commercial airline pilots continues to grow, here is what seven Canadian airlines are doing to secure a pipeline of skilled pilots into the future.

By now, you’re probably tired of reading headlines about “the pilot shortage,” and the rising demand for skilled and qualified aviators.

At the same time, you know it’s a reality that the industry is facing. Of course, it’s not just pilots that the industry needs; it’s people, in general — whether maintenance technicians, ground crew, cabin crew, or air traffic controllers. In fact, aviation training giant CAE forecasts a need for 63,000 new commercial pilots, 90,000 new commercial aircraft maintenance techs, and 116,000 new cabin crew in North America over the next 10 years, according to its 2023 Aviation Talent Forecast.

What we must pay attention to is what the aviation industry is doing to bring in the next generation of talent. This story focuses on just that — with particular emphasis on pilots in the Canadian airline sector.
