Air Canada recently held its annual meeting of shareholders, following the release of its 2023 annual report, highlighting its achievements in 2023. F/O Charlene Hudy, chair of the Air Canada pilot group, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), issued the following statement in response:

“Air Canada’s recently released 2023 annual report highlights its financial success. However, the airline failed to acknowledge the contributions made by their employees, specifically the pilots, who played a significant role in helping them achieve these impressive accomplishments.

“Air Canada pilots continue to negotiate a new collective agreement with the airline, currently with the assistance of a private mediator. During today’s annual meeting for shareholders, and onward,Air Canada has an opportunity to recognize the current market trends in the aviation sector, and the value and expertise our pilots bring to our company and passengers every day. Survey data shows that almost 500 Air Canada pilots are working with U.S. immigration firms in search of a contract that better reflects the value their professional skills bring to the airline. Air Canada’s future success, financially and operationally, will require the airline to recognize its pilots’ value, and take steps to attract and retain pilots.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents more than 77,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines.
