As directed by the Government of Canada, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) ceased airstrike operations as part of Operation Impact on Feb. 15, 2016. The CAF is refocusing its contribution to the Middle East Stabilization Force—the multinational coalition to halt and degrade the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
“I’m proud of the efforts of our CF-18 aircrews and all those who supported airstrike operations. I appreciate greatly their contribution and that of all members who have deployed on Operation Impact,” said defence minister Harjit S. Sajjan. “Canadians owe you and your families a debt of gratitude for your service and sacrifice.”
The refocused approach for Operation Impact will see the continuation of air-to-air refueling and aerial intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in support of coalition air operations. It also intensifies CAF efforts to train Iraqi security forces and to support coalition and regional partners in the campaign against ISIL.
The Royal Canadian Air Force’s six CF-188 Hornets, along with associated aircrew and support personnel, will depart the region in a phased approach in the coming weeks.
“In preparing for and conducting airstrike operations, our members responded quickly and effectively to contribute to efforts to halt the spread of ISIL and degrade the group’s capabilities,” said General Jonathan Vance, chief of the defence staff.
“I am proud of all members who have deployed on Operation Impact who made a valuable contribution to the stability and security of Iraq and the region.”
