Flair Airlines has announced a series of sustainability initiatives aimed at shaping the future of aviation.

Recognizing the necessity of air travel in today’s world, Flair is committed to balancing environmental responsibility with the essential need for affordable and accessible transportation. Flair announced key strategies and investments in sustainability, while continuing to deliver value to its passengers and stakeholders.

“I am thrilled to introduce our inaugural Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report as we embark on a journey toward a more sustainable future in aviation. As Canada’s sole ultra- low cost carrier, our commitment to providing affordable travel for all Canadians has always been at the forefront of our mission. I am proud to say that dedication to sustainability has always been an integral part of that mission,” said Stephen Jones, CEO of Flair Airlines.

“Our journey towards sustainability isn’t just about meeting regulatory requirements; it’s about pioneering change and setting a new standard for the aviation industry. We are committed to leading the way towards a more sustainable aviation industry that meets the needs of both present and future generations.”

Annual ESG Report

With the launch of Flair’s first annual ESG report. This comprehensive report outlines Flair’s efforts to prioritize both cost savings and emissions reductions for Canadians.

Throughout 2023, Flair focused on overcoming sustainability challenges through aircraft efficiency, waste reduction and community impact. At Flair, responsible operations and fuel-efficient flying are essential pillars of its identity. By integrating sustainability into its core business operations, Flair is proud to contribute to a more responsible and resilient aviation sector.

Monthly Carbon Emissions Reporting

In 2023, Flair had one of the lowest average emissions of 64 g per passenger/km.

Beginning in April, Flair will also publicly report monthly CO2 emissions, providing customers with valuable insights into the environmental impact of their flights and empowering travellers to consider the emissions impact when choosing an airline to fly with.

This GHG metric drives multiple efficiency initiatives, including fleet management, on-ground fuel burn reduction, and flight-path optimization.

On-board Recycling and Plastic Reduction

Flair’s innovative on-board waste reduction strategies included replacing single-use plastic items with compostable cups and cutlery, avoiding the use of 604,000 single-use plastic items on-board.

With the launch of its YYC inbound recycling pilot in 2023, recycling has become an integral part of Flair’s sustainability strategy and serves as a beacon of innovation, paving the way for other airlines and airports to follow suit. By collaboratively sharing its lessons and best practices, Flair aims to create a roadmap for industry-wide adoption of sustainable practices.

Flair’s ambitious goal for 2024 is to reduce inflight waste sent to landfills by 55 per cent and to ensure 80 per cent of all mixed recyclables are sorted and recycled by cabin crew.

“Flair is leading the way in shaping a new era of air travel that is both practical and sustainable,” said Amanda Mesluk, senior sustainability manager at Flair Airlines.

“Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of our business. By sharing our experiences and learnings, we aim to inspire and empower other airlines and airports to join us on this journey towards a more sustainable future. Together, we can pave the way for industry-wide adoption of responsible practices, ensuring that air travel remains a vital mode of transportation while minimizing its impact on the environment.”
