The Executive Board of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) is pleased to announce that Gordon Margison has accepted the role of technical director for the Federation.

Beginning immediately, Margison will lead the activities of the technical team from IFALPA’s headquarters in Montreal, Que.

IFALPA president, Cpt Amornvaj (Ben) Mansumitchai, said: “I believe one of the most important characteristics for an IFALPA staff member, especially a director, is a get-the-job-done attitude. Gordon embodies this quality. His vision for the technical and safety objectives of the federation is aligned with my views about the future of IFALPA.”

Margison is an international aviation safety professional with perspective across multiple industry organizations including airline operators, aviation regulators, and pilot associations. He holds a master’s degree in transport management from the University of Sydney.

A strong believer in the profound potential of positive safety culture to improve aviation safety and the piloting profession, he embraces these principles in all his endeavors. Margison’s leadership in IFALPA’s technical work has contributed to successes in advocating for strong international standards and recommend practices as well as industry guidance.

In the area of training, Margison has been instrumental in the development of direct safety outreach courses on fatigue management, positive safety culture, and runway safety team best practices, in conjunction with expert volunteers. He has overseen the implementation of these courses across all IFALPA regions.

Margison provides a strong strategic vision for IFALPA’s technical and safety initiatives. He has been a leader in structural improvements at IFALPA and has successfully advocated for the adoption of these changes over every level of governance.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Margison served as a supporter for the Global Pilot Community. His role as a coordinator of pilot experts in aviation medicine, peer support, and fatigue management proved to be pivotal in providing pilot advice to ICAO and governments for best practices to maintain safety and pilot wellbeing during the crisis.

“It is an honour to be entrusted by the Federation with the role of technical director. Together, the pilot community provides a strong and clear voice for aviation safety and efficiency. My commitment is to build on our success and ensure that the pilot perspective is heard in an ever-changing aviation industry. I am joined in this challenge by a strong team of professionals and pilot volunteers. I am continually inspired by the dedication shown by these individuals.”

An international not-for-profit organization, IFALPA represents over 110,000 pilots in more than 70 countries.
