Northern Lights Aero Foundation (NLAF) is accepting nominations for its 13th Annual Awards program until March 31. Each year, the national not-for-profit foundation honours outstanding Canadian women who have made a significant contribution to aviation or aerospace, and who continue to lay the groundwork for other women to enter or excel in these industries.

“We’re looking forward to reviewing the nominations of the many deserving women in aviation and aerospace this year,” commented Kathleen Lang, President of Northern Lights Aero Foundation. “It’s hard to believe we’re in our 13th year of the Elsie MacGill award, which has become a highly sought-after award in the industry. We receive so many nominations each year and it’s continually challenging to choose the recipients.”

Nominations are open now until March 31, 2022. For more information or to nominate someone, visit the website at northernlightsaerofoundation.com. The 2021 recipients will be selected by a judging panel comprised of industry experts and veterans, and will be honoured at the Elsie Awards Gala at the Sheraton Parkway Hotel and Conference Centre in Toronto in the fall.

The Northern Lights Aero Foundation’s Elsie MacGill Awards, “The Elsie” is named after aviation pioneer and human rights advocate, Elsie Gregory MacGill, who was the world’s first female aircraft designer. MacGill graduated from the University of Toronto’s electrical engineering program in 1927 and later became pivotal in the design and production of the Hawker Hurricane in Canada during WWII. During her career, MacGill was appointed to the Canadian Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

NLAF is always working on new initiatives. The Mentorship Program was established in 2018 and matches professionals in the industry with youth or students who are looking to establish their career. The program has been hugely successful in creating these professional relationships and providing opportunities to advise and guide the next generation. Also, the Captain Judy Cameron Air Canada Scholarship was established in 2019, which recognizes and celebrates the achievements of accomplished women studying in aviation and aerospace. Air Canada committed to awarding $20,000 per year for three years. It is open to young women pursuing non-traditional aviation careers as commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers who may not have the financial means to do so.
