From 1957 to 1959, my father, was the Base Transportation Officer at tiny RCAF Station McDonald, Manitoba, just a short distance from RCAF Portage La Prairie. He was then posted to 4 Wing, RCAF Cold Lake for 4 years.
He was 39 at the time, on a short service commission, having emigrated from Northern Ireland at age 38, as an ex-RAF veteran of 1936 to 1945 commissioned from the ranks and having served in the Sudan, India, and in 550 Squadron Bomber Command, as Base Maintenance Officer, getting the damaged returned Lancasters back up during the March 30 & 31st, 1943 raids on Nuremburg.
